My efforts to pull up the boards of our back deck had been going well for the four or five days I had been working on it….until this past Monday.
Yes, as I was picking up the latest board I had pried loose, a couple of yellow jackets apparently took offense to me being on their “turf” and stung the hell out of me, once on my right forearm and once on my left foot foot. Needless to say, I yelped out in pain while cursing loud enough for some of our neighbors neighbors to hear me. Of course, I’m also pretty sure that they would have done the same thing had they been stung.
I feel a bit foolish saying this to say but I forgot how much a bee sting hurts, especially those of a yellow jacket, for whatever reason. Not only that but the pain, in my case anyway, seemed to slowly rise as the minutes passed by. Good times, I tell ya! Then again, that probably had something to do with the fact that I had been stung twice, the first time that I can recall ever being stung multiple times. Before Monday, I hadn’t been stung by a bee since I was about eight.
Needless to say, I won’t be going back out to move all the boards that I’ve piled up in different areas of the yard until I call some place to spray and, hopefully, kill any hives or bees close by. Then I’ll finish up what I started.
The funny thing is that, prior to Monday, I hadn’t thunk twice about the possibility of being stung once never mind twice. I just went along, pulling one board after another out and became more and more encouraged that I was going to remove all the boards that Ann wanted me to take out without any trouble. But, it was too good to be true! Oh well, I guess the next time I do this kind of work, I’ll be sure to check for any hives.
